Description

Representatives of The Paros Foundation have visited more than 100 schools throughout Armenia. While some schools have either been renovated thanks to the Armenian government or as a result of the generosity of international donors, many remain in deplorable conditions and have little hope of being renovated in the near future. These conditions affect both the ability for students to learn, as well as the health of students and teachers.

The Paros Foundation will directly oversee the renovation of the school bathroom including addressing such elements as windows, doors, flooring, lighting, paint, sinks, faucet and toilet. Whenever possible, the school staff, students and their parents will be incorporated into the classroom remodel project to help build a sense of community and personal investment.

The Need

Students need a dignified and clean restroom to use while attending school. Currently, many students have no option other than to use unsanitary restroom facilities, or, even worse, avoid using the restroom at all until they reach a more appropriate venue, which can lead to health issues in later life.

Short Term Impact

The reconstruction of a bathroom will employ a at least one craftsman and support the local economy through the purchase of necessary building materials and fixtures.

Long Term Impact

Hundreds of children will benefit from a modern, dignified bathroom to use while attending school.

Ghoghanj Children’s Center College Entrance Test Prep 2012-13

Description

The mission of the Ghoghanj Children’s Center is to provide the proper support and guidance children need to excel in school and become self-confident and respectful young adults. Founded in 2003, the Ghoghanj Children’s Center works with vulnerable “at-risk” children and their families to help them overcome social, psychological and legal issues.

The Center’s programs are specifically designed to facilitate group discussion and are sensitive to the psychological challenges of an at-risk child and their families. The Center works to develop successful communication, self-expression and tolerance skills among the students. A fundamental focus on homework assistance and tutoring to ensure academic success is a key ingredient of the programs’ success.

As students enter the 10th grade, they must begin preparing for their college entrance examinations. A successful score on these examinations means a child has a chance to attend college and turn his/her life around. As these students have substantial financial difficulties, it is impossible for them to engage a tutor for these tests. This new program of the Ghoghanj Children’s Center would provide 10th and 11th grade, at-risk students free of charge tutoring services for their college entrance examinations. The goal of this program is to help these students transition successfully into college.

Packs on Backs Armenia: Vanadzor Orran

Description

The Heros Humanitarian Foundation (HHF), a Los Angeles based non-profit organization, supports children in need and their educational advancement. The organization was founded in 2008 by six Armenian Americans with the belief that no child should be deprived of the essential necessities needed for their education regardless of their socioeconomic status. Their mission is to provide backpacks and school supplies to children living in poverty and from low socioeconomic households around the world. Through their Packs on Backs initiative, HHF hopes to motivate children, help them stay and excel in school, and have successful futures.

The Heros Humanitarian Foundation has partnered with The Paros Foundation to bring their Packs on Backs initiative to Armenia. After the successful distribution of 280 backpacks and school supplies to children in Gyumri’s impoverished neighborhood, our goal is to provide the same assistance to 100 children attending the Orran Center in Vanadzor.

Vanadzor is Armenia’s third-largest city and the capital of the Lori Region. It is also one of the three main cities that suffered during the devastating 1988 Spitak earthquake. The dismal situation of Vanadzor is evident through its consistent decrease in population due to high unemployment rate, poor living conditions and the low prospect of development. Orran, an organization focused on diverting children from the streets and engaging them in academic, cultural, and extra-curricular activities established a center in Vanadzor in 2012. Children ages 6 to 18 and who come from economically deprived families attend the center regularly. Currently, numerous children in Vanadzor cannot attend school because they don’t have the basic necessities. Sponsorship of this project will help give 100 children at this center backpacks and school supplies. A donation of $30 will help obtain a backpack filled with supplies for one child. School supplies will be grade appropriate and include a combination of pencils, pens, pencil cases, notebooks, folders, erasers, sharpeners, glue, scissors, rulers, highlighters, and crayons. In-kind donations of the items listed are also welcomed.

The Need

It is very difficult for a child to learn and excel in their studies without a proper backpack and essential school supplies. In addition, without the proper supplies these children are less likely to attend school on a regular basis, hence severely hindering their educational growth and minimizing future opportunities.

Short Term Impact

100 children attending the Vanadzor Orran will receive proper backpacks and school supplies to aid in their educational advancement. Local school supplies will be purchased whenever economically feasible in turn boosting the local economy.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, 100 children attending Vanadzor Orran will be given the opportunity to excel in their studies and further their educational careers. In additions, children will be motivated to attend school more regularly, and have increased self-esteem.

Maroush Dekermenjian has adopted this project and helped raise the funds needed with the help of her family and friends in honor of her birthday.

The mission of the Ghoghanj Children’s Center is to provide the proper support and guidance children need to excel in school and become self-confident and respectful young adults. Founded in 2003, the Ghoghanj Children’s Center works with vulnerable “at-risk” children and their families to help them overcome social, psychological and legal issues.

The Center’s programs are specifically designed to facilitate group discussion and are sensitive to the psychological challenges of an at-risk child and their families. The Center works to develop successful communication, self-expression and tolerance skills among the students. A fundamental focus on the arts, homework assistance and tutoring to ensure academic success is a key ingredient of the programs’ success.

Since its inception, the Ghoghanj Children’s Center has been continuously attempting to expose it’s students to new and developing academic opportunities. The existing computer and Internet course at Ghoghanj provide these opportunities and need funding to continue. The continuation of these courses will provide 75 at-risk students with three levels of classes progressing from proper computer usage, to Internet use and eventually basic web design. Children at the Center will also gain access to free Internet whether they are enrolled in the courses or not. The goal of this program is to teach their students the proper technological skills essential for a successful future.

Aghcheeg Project

Description

Although women’s roles in society have evolved immensely throughout the centuries, they still differ vastly among different cultures and countries. Christina Cherekdjian, a young Armenian living in America, is interested in studying women in their everyday realities in present day Armenia. Her vision is to document women of all ages, socioeconomic statuses, and rural and urban environments through photography with the help of other young diasporan women. Christina hopes that these photos will be able to help educate, and spark interest and dialogue about modern day roles of women in Armenia’s society.

Photos from her cultural experiment will be showcased at an art exhibit that will travel throughout Armenia and the United States allowing Christina to share her thoughts and discoveries for one year. The exhibit will be hung in museums, art galleries and school throughout Armenia to help launch a discussion about women’s roles in Armenia.

The Need

A study of women in Armenia is well overdue. It is through discussion and education that people learn about themselves and evolve and improve their existence. This project can help spark great interest in this topic and create discussions that can inform positive cultural changes for women in Armenia.

Short Term Impact

In the short term, Christina and her team will be given cameras and grant funding in order to complete a photo study of women in Armenia’s society. In addition, an art exhibit will be held in the United States and Armenia, allowing Christina to share her findings, discoveries, and thoughts. The exhibit in Armenia will travel throughout several towns and villages. Furthermore, the local economy will receive a boost due to the printing of the photos in Armenia.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, the photo exhibit will tour Armenia and the United States for a year’s period. This project will continue to inform and educate Armenian women, both in Armenia and the diaspora and help bring upon change and advancement.

On July 23, Christina Cherekdjian’s project came to life with the opening of the Aghcheeg Project Photo Exhibit in Yerevan, Armenia. Her interest in women’s issues prompted her to apply and win a grant through her school to initiate this important project. The Aghcheeg Project Photo Exhibit is comprised of a series of photographs taken by Christina and several of her peers during The Paros Foundation’s SERVICE-Armenia 2014 trip this summer.

The exhibit,comprised of more than 40 large format photographs, begins its tour at the Narekatsi Art Center in Armenia where it will be for the next week.

The Aghcheeg Project Photo Exhibit is being showcased at Christina Cherekdjian’s school, Notre Dame High School in San Francisco, where she has been asked to speak about her peers about the journey in putting this project together. The photos will also be exhibited at St. Andrews Armenia Church also in the San Francisco Bay Area right after.

Healthy Teeth 2015

Description

Dental hygiene is commonly overlooked in poverty-stricken regions around the world, including Armenia, for the obvious fact that the population has more pressing concerns such as securing everyday necessities like food, shelter and clothing. In the light of all these hardships, brushing one’s teeth for two minutes, twice a day seems trivial and indeed insignificant.

The Healthy Teeth Project aims to make oral hygiene and health attainable for children living in poverty stricken areas throughout Armenia. Through this project The Paros Foundation, along with supporters and volunteers, hopes to raise awareness about the importance of promoting good dental hygiene in Armenian children. Furthermore, through this effort we hope to prevent more extensive dental problems, which would cause more serious health issues in the future.

The Healthy Teeth project was launched in 2013 by Raffi Dadaian. Since then over 7,000 items, including toothbrushes, toothpastes, mouthwash and dental floss, have been distributed throughout Armenia and Artsakh.

We hope to obtain 5,000 more dental supplies through this project by both individuals as well as dental offices throughout the United States. As an integral component of this project, volunteers distributing the supplies will also hold a short presentation on the proper usage of these dental hygiene tools.

The Need

Due to more pressing concerns, dental care and hygiene is commonly overlooked in poverty-stricken regions in Armenia. This can cause a lifetime of dental problems and oral disease. Children in these areas are in need of dental supplies in order to be able to practice good oral hygiene and prevent serious dental issues in the future.

Short Term Impact

Children will receive basic dental hygiene instruction in a form they can easily understand, along with the proper instruments to care for their teeth.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, homes in these communities will be improved beyond their previous condition. In addition, quickly removing these scars of war will improve villager’s attitudes and moral, which is equally as important as their living conditions.

Dental supplies were distributed to the children attending our Debi Arach Children’s Center in Gyumri with the help of our SERVICE Armenia 2015 group, sponsors, volunteers and Raffi Dadaian, who helped launch the Healthy Teeth project in 2013.

Scholarship for a Sustainable Future: Lusine Q.

Description

Nor Luyce works with young girls, ages 14-17, from two local orphanages and/or from poverty stricken families from Gyurmi, Armenia. Under the direction of their Executive Director, Shoghik Mikayelyan, the program provides their mentees with positive roles models and emotional support. The reduction of isolation is provided by mentors and by field trips, which expose the children to various work and educational settings. In addition, Nor Luyce’s program emphasizes the development of educational and career plans. They are now at the stage of either beginning or continuing to help implement each older child’s plan for higher education. Each child has also either completed or is in the process of completing a career plan, which includes the most appropriate type and place of higher education.

Nor Luyce is trying to provide Lusine, a young girl from Gyumri, with a scholarship that would reduce her out of pocket costs towards her education. Lusine lives at home with her parents, two sisters (one of which is also apart of Nor Luyce’s Mentorship program) and brother. Her father is unable to work due to heart issues while her mother’s income, as a nurse is not enough to support their whole family. Lusine is currently studying accounting at the Shirak Region State College and is striving for a secure career and financial success. She loves drawing, especially churches and nature, and hopes that one day her artwork can be showcased at an art gallery. The requested scholarship funds will help Lusine continue her studies and cover the costs of her tuition, uniform, books, stationaries, winter clothing and her transportation fee for one year.

As a consequence, many of these children are deprived from the opportunity to pursue their education. The frustration of these deficits in addition to the expectation that they will not be able to afford additional education may even lead to a lack of motivation to seek the knowledge and support needed. By being given the opportunity to pursue educational goals, they will be able to secure job opportunities, a good future and a successful life.

Short Term Impact

Lusine Q., who currently lives in Gyumri’s, will receive the financial support she needs, in a form of a scholarship, covering the costs of her college tuition, uniform, books, stationaries, winter clothes and transportation for one year.

Long Term Impact

The long-term goal is that Lusine Q., being given the opportunity to continue pursuing her educational goals at the university level will have a reasonable chance to become self-sufficient member of Armenian society and have a successful life.

After receiving the scholarship funds, Arevik and her sister Lusine were both in need of winter coats in order to stay warm during Gyumri’s cold winter. Due to their families financial limitations, their mother was unable to purchase the coats. Upon hearing about this situation, our generous donor, Mr. Candan, who funded both sisters scholarships, covered the costs for the girls to have brand new and warm coats.

Children living in orphanages are often isolated and may lack the knowledge and adult support necessary to make appropriate post orphanage choices. As a consequence, many of these children are deprived from the opportunity to pursue their education. The frustration of these deficits in addition to the expectation that they will not be able to afford additional education may even lead to a lack of motivation to seek the knowledge and support needed. By being given the opportunity to pursue educational goals, they will be able to secure job opportunities, a good future and a successful life.

Short Term Impact

Qristine, who currently resides in one of Gyumri’s orphanages, will receive the financial support she needs, in a form of a scholarship, covering the costs of her college tuition, uniform, books, stationaries and transportation for one year.

Long Term Impact

The long-term goal is that Qristine, being given the opportunity to pursue her educational goals at the university level will have a reasonable chance to become self-sufficient member of Armenian society and have a successful life.
