Description

Representatives of The Paros Foundation have visited more than 100 schools throughout Armenia. While some schools have either been renovated thanks to the Armenian government or as a result of the generosity of international donors, many remain in deplorable conditions and have little hope of being renovated in the near future. These conditions affect both the ability for students to learn, as well as the health of students and teachers. How is a student supposed to learn if there are not proper desks, chairs or windows in the classroom?

The Paros Foundation will directly oversee the renovation of this classroom including addressing such elements as windows, doors, flooring, lighting, paint, chalk or white board and desks and chairs. Whenever possible, the school, students and their parents will be incorporated into the classroom remodel project to help build a sense of community and personal investment. This classroom is one of five classrooms, two bathrooms and the hallway comprising the elementary school classes at Hatsik.

Hatsik is a village in the Armavir Province of Armenia. This village of 2,558 people currently houses one school with 285 students in attendance.

The kindergarten in the village of Aygepar was hit by Azeri artillery this morning. We had finished the complete renovation of this kindergarten in 2018 and will assess the damage and rebuild again as soon as possible! We build, they destroy!

A local construction crew has begun. They have started with the demolition of the final two classrooms, the staircase and the remaining hallways at the Hatsik Village School.

 June 25, 2015

The local crew has started installing new doors and windows and will continue to work on the electrical as well as plastering the walls and ceiling.

  July 2, 2015

The SERVICE Armenia 2015 group has arrived and will be working on these two classrooms, stairs and remaining hallways for several of their service work days. Along with this, the group will be helping to renovate the gym (See Hatsik School Gym project)

July 8, 2015

The SERVICE Armenia 2015 group helped sand and paint the walls. The remaining final touch ups will be completed by the local construction crew.

 August 18, 2015

Work on the final two classrooms, the staircase and the remaining hallways is done and the classrooms are ready for students in September.

Kindergarten for Vahagnadzor

Description

The villages of Vahagnadzor and Vahagni are approximately three miles away from one another in the Lori Region (north of the city of Vanadzor.) Neither village has an operating kindergarten for its children. These villages are located along the north – south railway line. Immediately to the south of Vahagnadzor is a rail switching station. Several people from the village of Vahagni work at the station and pass through Vahagnadzor daily solving any potential transportation issues. It is estimated that approximately 10 of the potential students will come from the village of Vahagni.

A kindergarten building owned by the village of Vahagnadzor exists and is in good condition. $700 in funding is needed to connect the kindergarten to the water and gas networks. The Kindergarten would operate year-round with running water and heat. The village mayor has secured local donations and support to staff and operate the program, but gas for heating and cooking and water for cooking and the restroom is necessary.

The Need

Preschool and kindergarten education for children ages 3 to 6 has many proven and well-documented benefits. Children in the villages of Vahagnadzor and Vahagni do not currently have these educational opportunities and therefore begin their elementary school education at a disadvantage.

Short Term Impact

Five people will be employed either part or full time to operate the school. In addition, 22 children ages 3 to 6 will receive appropriate kindergarten instruction.

Long Term Impact

In addition to the employment and direct instruction of a minimum of 22 children, the villages of Vahagnadzor and Vahagni will deepen their cooperation through this collaborative project.

Debi Arach Happy Birthday Fund

Description

Paros Foundation established the Debi Arach Children’s Center in Gyumri, Armenia on April 15, 2015 with the help of generous donors. The center, which provides 150 children each week the necessary academic, psychological, social and humanitarian support, has since been a source of positivity in this city. The residents of Gyumri, Armenia’s second largest city have endured very devastating realities since the tragic 1988 Spitak Earthquake. More than 100,000 residents were left homeless, and plagued with unemployment and rampant poverty for years to come. In turn, the fate of children in Gyumri has also been affected. Dealing with the difficulty of finding means to feed and care for their families, many parents are unable to provide their children with the proper guidance, supervision, educational aid and the financial resources for them to excel in school and have successful futures. The Debi Arach Children’s Center, which in Armenian means “moving forward,” helps these socially vulnerable children through a holistic approach providing them with both humanitarian and educational support. The center provides counseling and group therapy with a psychologist on staff, homework help and tutoring for almost every subject the children learn in school including English, Math, Art/Design, and Computer classes. Additionally, they are served a nutritious meal everyday, helping them receive the calories and/or nutrients they would otherwise not have. Furthermore, the Center addresses a very important hygienic need by providing the children in attendance with supervised bathing facilities. The goal is to help hundreds of children develop a vision for a successful future, and to give them the skills they need to reach these goals. This project is impacting the lives of hundreds of socially vulnerable children by helping them gain the guidance and support they need in order to create greater future opportunities, and become successful individuals and good citizens.

To date, the center has already had several important successes. The children as a whole have gained several pounds since they have started attending, demonstrating their need for nutritious and consistent meals. Additionally, three children have been taken out of boarding schools and brought to our center and now live back at home with their families. Staff trainings have begun with an academic counsel of professionals from the United States and Armenia to ensure that the children are receiving the best care, treatment and methods for their development.

To support the psychological development of the children and underscore their sense of self worth, developing positive childhood memories is important. To this end, each month, all of the children having birthdays will be celebrated following lunch with a cake. Both groups of attendees will celebrate the children monthly.

The Need

Thousands of children in Gyumri are living in extreme poverty, with little hope for a decent future. These socially vulnerable children are in need of a safe and enriching environment where they can receive additional guidance through social, psychological and academic support giving them a chance to break their cycle of poverty. An important component of normal psychological developments are developing normal childhood memories. Celebrating important occasions such as a birthday with a group of their friends and peers significantly contribute to a child’s proper psychological development.

Short Term Impact

Sponsoring the Birthday Cake Fund will allow the Debi Arach Children’s Center to celebrate all of the children’s birthdays, with a monthly cake for each group. In addition to the benefit to the children, the local economy will gain a modest benefit from the sale of two larger cakes per month.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, children at the center will develop a sense of confidence and well being because of the well rounded and normal set of childhood memories they have developed as part of their attendance. This will contribute to the overall goal of helping these children gain the skills they need to become productive adults.

The center hopes to expand Debi Arach with the establishment of a vocational center to provide young adults with a set of skills and tools they will need to secure gainful employment and help break their family’s cycle of poverty. Currently, at Debi Arach children expressing an interest at attending college receive free tutoring to help them gain admission. Those who do not plan to continue their formal education will be enrolled in several vocational training programs offered at no charge. In addition, young adult who do not currently attend the Debi Arach Children’s Center will also be invited to enroll and participate in the programs. Training classes such as computer programing, hardware repair, welding, culinary and cosmetology – – all of which are in demand in the Gyumri job market – – will be offered.

The center will operate Monday- Saturday and classes will be offered on a rotating basis. 50 young adults will be enrolled per year and attend the training class of their choice. Once the training courses are completed, the Debi Arach staff will work with the students on job placement. Sponsorship towards this project will help complete modest renovations, employ qualified staff and run the vocational center for one year. The goal is to help hundreds of children develop a vision for a successful future, and to give them the skills they need to reach these goals.

The Need

Young adults living in extreme poverty in Gyumri, who are not interested or able to continue their higher education, have very bleak prospects for a successful future. To combat this reality, the Debi Arach Children’s Center has decided to launch a vocational program to provide job skills and aid in job placement in order to help these young adults change their lives towards a successful future by gaining real skills and securing real employment.

Short Term Impact

The short-term modest renovations will take place to the current Debi Arach facility to establish the vocation center. Staff will be hired to oversee the center and facilitate training classes for 50 young adults.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, the cycle of poverty will be broken for the newer generations in Gyumri. The new skills these young adults will gain through vocational courses will help secure great jobs and provide opportunities to change their lives. In addition, Gyumri’s economy will also benefit from additional skills being introduced to the job market.

Today the “Armath” engineering lab at our Vocational Center is now open and in session. Students aged 10-16 are taking courses in engineering, programming, 3D printing and robotics through training courses developed by the Union of Information Technology Enterprises (UITE). A very special thank you to the Assarian Family Foundation (MI-USA) who funded the establishment of this excellent center and their continued support.

Hatsik School Gym Rebuild

Description

Hatsik is a village in the Armavir Province of Armenia. This village of 2,558 people currently houses one school with 285 students in attendance. The Hatsik Village School, which was the site for renovations completed by the Paros Foundation’s SERVICE Armenia 2013 and 2014 groups, is in need of a complete gym makeover. The gym at the Hatsik Village School not only serves as the main sporting area for the entire school, but a meeting place for the entire village. The gym is home to several village meetings and events, and sporting functions for all children and adults from the entire village. Thanks to the generosity of past and present donors, The Paros Foundation renovated ten classrooms, three restrooms and the hallways housing the elementary school wing during the SERVICE Armenia 2013 and 2014 trips and plans to renovate more classrooms during the SERVICE Armenia 2015 trip. The regional government has allocated funding to complete the school’s heating system. In addition, the Hatsik Village Municipality is committed to help raise funds within their network of donors to help with the restoration of the school’s kitchen.

Sponsorship of this project will help raise the amount needed in order to complete renovations at the Hatsik School gym including, new doors, windows and window netting, new lighting, repairs to the walls ceiling and paint, and boys and girls locker rooms. Our previous renovations at the Hatsik School are well maintained, thus giving us great motivation to continue our work at this site. The Paros Foundation is committed to completing renovations and dramatically improving the overall condition for the children at this school.

According to medical research exercise has many physical and mental advantages for school aged children. Although the Hatsik Village School has a gym, it is in no condition to allow students to participate in physical education classes and receive exercise. A complete gym renovation will provide 285 students the opportunity to participate in sports related education and events in a safe and suitable environment. Furthermore, the renovated gym will serve as a meeting space for the entire village of Hatsik.

Short Term Impact

The short-term impact of this project will be to complete a full renovation of the gym at the Hatsik Village School with new doors, windows and window netting, new lighting, repairs to the walls, ceiling and paint, and boys and girls locker rooms. The gym will immediately serve as a sporting area for 285 students, and a community meeting center for the entire village. In addition, local villagers will be hired to complete the construction work, thus providing them with temporary jobs. Furthermore, materials, when possible, will be purchased from the surrounding area.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, the success of this project will provide a proper facility for physical education, sporting events and community events for current and future students and residents in the village of Hatsik. A new gym will further promote good health and exercise for students for years to come.

The Need

Children living in Armenia’s poverty stricken villages cannot afford a basic toy that would provide them hours of entertainment and good physical exercise like a soccer ball. This effort would help meet this need.

Short Term Impact

Soccer balls will be distributed to schools in isolated and poverty stricken villages to help promote physical fitness and team sports.

Long Term Impact

The lives of several thousand children have the potential to be altered for the better both physically through exercise as well as promoting soccer as a team sport. Who knows, maybe this effort will result in the development of the next Pele’!

Instruments for Talin Music School

Description

The Talin Music School is located in the Aragatsotn Region of Armenia. Talin is considered one of the oldest residential areas of the region and has a population of about 5,400 people. The school is housed in space provided by the town. The Talin Music School provides music classes to more than 110 children annually and employs 15 teachers. Among the lessons provided are classes in piano, duduk, kanon, violin, vocal and music theory. The school receives support from the local government for administrative expenses and the students pay a modest monthly fee to attend classes. The support from the local government and the fees paid by students are not enough to allow the school to replace needed musical instruments.

The Need

Children from Armenia’s smaller towns suffer from the lack of suitable facilities. The promotion of a child’s education and preservation of our rich culture depend on quality educational institutions. The Talin Music School is working to promote education, culture and the arts for the children in Talin, Armenia. In order to fulfill this goal the school is in need of new and functioning instruments.

Short Term Impact

The children at the Talin Music School will be able to perform at a higher level due to the brand new instruments. The local economy will benefit from the local purchase of several different musical instruments, their delivery and tuning.

Long Term Impact

The 110 students currently at the school and future students will benefit from music instruction on proper musical instruments.

Description

The Ghoghanj Children’s Center located in the Kentron of Yerevan was established 10 years ago and provides afterschool and summer school programs for approximately 75 children every month. Children who attend the Center are loosely defined as “at risk.” These children typically come from very poor households, often times with a single head of household, who cannot pay for such assistance. Additionally, these children are not likely to receive proper supervision after school while completing their homework and other tasks. Due to the hard work, dedication and vision of Diana Grigoryan, a PH.D candidate in Psychology, and her staff, the Center has been able to help socially vulnerable children and give them the support and guidance they need to succeed.

The goal of the Ghoghanj Children’s Center is to provide the necessary academic, psychological and social support to ensure that the children attending mature to well adjusted, successful, young adults. The Center provides several core classes within their curriculum and has had add on opportunities as funding has permitted. Core classes include English, Russian, Computer, Design, Painting, Theater and Dance. Add on programs have included College Entrance Exam Tutoring, Side by Side Mentoring and Ecology Club activities. Furthermore, 13 of the Center’s previous students graduated and are now attending college, proving that Ghoghanj’s model works.

In order to further impact more “at-risk” children, the Center has identified a need for this model to be replicated and offered to other communities in Armenia. A second center for “at-risk” children will be established and modeled after the Ghoghanj Children’s Center in another socially vulnerable community in Yerevan. The new center will provide 75-100 students the same core classes (English, Russian, Computer, Design, Painting, Theater and Dance) as the Ghoghanj Children’s Center. The goal of this project is to broaden the services offered to socially vulnerable children and families in other communities and provide them with the proper support and guidance needed to excel in school and become self-confident and respectful young adults.

The Need

Children in a second socially vulnerable community in Yerevan are in need of additional guidance through social, psychological and academic support, but are too far to be able to attend the Ghoghanj Children’s Center located in the Kentron of Yerevan. A second Center is needed in order to provide at-risk students with the opportunity to attend afterschool and summer school programs close to their homes. Furthermore, these children will be able gain additional skills necessary for a successful future.

Short Term Impact

The short-term impact of this project will be to establish a second Center for At-Risk Kids in another socially vulnerable community in Yerevan and will serve 75-100 new students. In addition, the new center will offer core classes including English, Russian, computer, design, painting, theater and dance. Instructors will be immediately employed to help instruct and oversee these courses.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, this project has the potential of impacting the lives of 75-100 at-risk students by helping them gain the guidance and support they need in order to create greater future opportunities, and become successful individuals and good citizens.

Today we did the ribbon cutting at the new Ghoghanj Children’s Center location in Nor Nork. The space is well located and with modest renovations to the bathroom we are able to begin providing after school services to an additional 75 children!
