Description

The Cultural Society of Armenians from Istanbul has created a scholarship fund in memory of one if its founding members, Mr. Shahen Kavafian.

Mr. Kavafian was born on August 24, 1933 in Istanbul, Turkey, where he received his primary education.  He graduated from Robert College in Istanbul and then moved to the United States to further his education. He received a master’s degree in engineering at the University of Michigan and settled in metro Detroit.  He worked at Detroit Edison for the entirety of his professional career.  

In 1964, he became one of the founding members of the Cultural Society of Armenians from Istanbul, an organization which helps promote Armenian cultural and educational programs.  Mr. Kavafian shared a love of music and the arts with his mother, who was an accomplished pianist.  

When Mr. Kavafian passed away on April 20, 2019, he left a generous contribution to the Cultural Society of Armenians from Istanbul.  To honor his memory, a music scholarship fund has been created in 2024 to support student’s attending the Komitas Conservatory in Yerevan, Armenia.

Aparan School Auditorium

Description

Aparan is a town in the Aragatsotn Province of Armenia, about 50 kilometers northwest of the capital Yerevan. The town has a population of about 6,500 people.

Founded in 1986, the Secondary School 2 after Hambardzum Voskanyan underwent a partial remodel in 2000 and today serves 560 students with the support of 70 dedicated teachers and staff. Earlier this year, strong winds damaged the school’s roof, which will soon be renovated with government support. Over the years, the school has proudly produced athletes who have competed in the Olympics and earned championship titles across Europe and around the world. Beyond sports, students have access to a variety of clubs and extracurricular programs, including a renowned dance ensemble that represents the school’s commitment to art and culture.

To continue offering these opportunities and to strengthen its cultural programs, the school now requires a full renovation of its auditorium. This project will upgrade the stage, seating, lighting, paint, and floors, creating a vibrant and inspiring space for performances, events, and student activities.

The stage was renovated in April of 2024.

The Need

The renovation is needed to provide students with a safe, modern, and fully equipped space for performances, gatherings, and cultural events. Updating the auditorium will ensure the school can continue fostering creativity, community, and student growth for years to come.

Short Term Impact

In the short term the school auditorium will be renovated including new flooring, electrical fixtures, paint, a new stage and  new auditorium chairs. Supplies will be purchased locally and local labor will be used whenever possible, thus providing them with temporary jobs.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, the completion of this project will provide a proper facility for current and future students and town residents to hold graduation ceremonies, musical recitals, concerts, seminars and other functions for the entire town.

Sporting Goods for Village Schools

Description

For many of Armenia’s most isolated and poverty stricken regions, sporting equipment is difficult to come by and expensive to buy. By supporting this project you will help thousands of children attending schools in the poverty stricken villages throughout Armenia. Although schools in these villages may have a few sporting goods, often times, the kids are playing with items that are old, unsafe and unusable.
Our goal is to purchase and distribute a variety of sporting goods and equipment to village schools and give these students the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities, play individual and team sports and exercise. In addition, the completion of this project will help to promote health and fitness.
The variety of sporting goods will include volleyballs, volleyball nets, basketballs, basketball hoops, soccer balls, soccer nets, wrestling mats, jump ropes, hula hoops, assortment of weights, tennis rackets, tennis balls and some gymnastics equipment based on the needs of individual schools.

In the long term the lives of several thousand children throughout the villages of Armenia will be positively affected. This project will not only promote good health through providing them with a chance to exercise, but will also help to increase good team work skills through team sports, and give them an opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities.

Hatsik School Auditorium

Description

The village of Hatsik is located about ten minutes from the city of Armavir in Armenia’s Armavir region about 60 kilometers from Yerevan. Hatsik is home to 2,560 residents. The village has one school with 260 children in attendance. In 2013, The Paros Foundation and its SERVICE Armenia program began the renovation of one of the two buildings on campus. Over the course of four years, renovations were made to three bathrooms, twelve classrooms, the hallways, gym and locker room. The facade of the building was also repaired. The school’s auditorium needs to be renovated to facilitate school gathers and performances. This renovation will include the replacement of the windows and doors, rebuilding of the stage, new electrical, new paint and new seating. The renovation will also include the cosmetic renovation of the hall immediately in front of the entrance to the auditorium.

The Need

260 children in the school at Hatsik do not have a proper auditorium to conduct plays, hold gatherings and performances. The school and its students have a vibrant and active schedule and would greatly benefit from this renovated facility.

In the short term, the school would immediately benefit from a renovated auditorium. Materials and labor would be purchased locally, which would benefit the local economy.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, both the school and the village would benefit from a new gathering and performance space. In addition to furthering the education of the children at the school, Armenia’s culture will be promoted via a new emphasis on performance and the fine arts.

Terchoonian Home Restoration

Description

The site of the Terchoonian Home, located in Gyumri Armenia, holds great historical significance. It was an orphanage during the Armenian Genocide managed by the Near East Relief, a social and economic development organization established in 1915. It later became a military headquarters for the Soviet army. In 1988, the building was heavily damaged during the devastating Spitak Earthquake. Due to support by the Terchoonian Family, and the hard work and dedication of the late Archbishop Mesrob Ashjian and Romen Gozmoyan, the building was purchased and renovated. The Terchoonian Home Orphanage opened its doors again in 2003 through the generous donation by the Terchoonian Family honoring the late Vahan Terchoonian. The Terchoonian Family chose Gyumri as it was the city Terchoonian found refuge in after escaping from Turkey, before eventually immigrating to the United States.

Today, the orphanage houses 84 children and operates a school that serves a total of 115 children with 54 individuals on staff. This historic building, specifically its third floor, is in need of emergency repairs prior to another harsh Gyumri winter. Sponsorship of this project will help urgently complete renovations, which include repairs to fix several leaks in the roof, replacement of 32 windows on the third floor (several of which have been boarded up because there is no glass in them or they don’t close), new doors for the third floor corridor (at each staircase), balcony, bedrooms and classrooms, and new carpeting for the rooms with water damage where children stay. Furthermore, the exterior walls on the third floor are made of asbestos panels, which have been poorly installed, are not water tight and have caused the third floor carpeting in the rooms to become damp and foul over time. The asbestos panels will be replaced with a new exterior wall that will be weather/water tight. Additional repairs are also needed, such as repairs to water pipes and partial renovation of two bathrooms (including drain pipes and the addition of a shower stall), but will be addressed after the above urgent needs are met. These renovations to the orphanage are important to not only keep the children and staff safe, warm and protected from illnesses that may arise due to poor conditions, but also to help preserve a building that holds such significance for Armenian history in its walls.

The orphanage is in need of several emergency repairs in order to withstand another harsh winter.

The Need

Additionally, preserving this building is of high cultural importance due to its historical significance. 

Short Term Impact

The short-term impact of this project will include repairs to several leaks in the roof, repairs to 32 windows on the third floor, installation of new doors for the third floor corridor, balcony, repairs to the bedrooms and classrooms, new carpeting for the children’s rooms and replacement of the asbestos panels on the third floor with a new exterior wall that will be weather/water tight. All materials will be purchased in Armenia, thus providing a boost to the local economy. In addition, local labor will be hired to complete the construction work whenever possible, thus providing locals with temporary jobs. 

Long Term Impact

In the long term, additional repairs will be made such as repairs to water pipes and partial renovation of two bathrooms (including drain pipes and the addition of shower stall). The success of this project will provide a proper, safe and warm facility for current and future children attending or living in the Terchoonian Home. The amount of illnesses and colds will be decreased with the elimination of leaks and water damage. Furthermore, a building that holds great historical significance will continue to be preserved for years to come.

Lernakert Culture House Roof Renovation

Lernakert is a small village in Armenia’s Shirak province, home to 1,413 residents and a vibrant community life centered around its culture house & community center. In recent years, community groups and local partners have renovated the building and created after‑school clubs and a game room where elders and young people gather to play chess, backgammon, and checkers.

These small but meaningful projects have improved children’s daily lives and restored hope among villagers. Today, Lernakert urgently needs support to renovate the roof of the Lernakert Culture House so it can continue to serve as a safe, welcoming hub for cultural events, education, and community gatherings for generations to come.

GOALS Armenia Soccer Girls’ Leadership Camp

Help us bring the spirit and fun of the Women’s World Cup to Armenia!

Women’s soccer is exploding all over the world and Armenia is no exception. Thanks to your support, today GOALS girls’ leagues are in 8 of Armenia’s 10 regions!! As the world celebrates female athletes in France this summer, GOALS will be holding soccer and leadership camps to bring the joy of sport to Armenia. GOALS is the only NGO working in Armenia to raise awareness and access to sports for girls, shattering stereotypes along the way. We use sport for education outside the classroom with programs about leadership, gender equality, and civic activism.

Problems:
● Stereotypes towards girls playing soccer

How we solve the problems:

Youth Training Camp: $10,000

● Develop soccer and life skills for 15 elite soccer players from every part of Armenia through participation in a week-long, eleite soccer leadership training program.

● Improve civic activism throughout the regions of Armenia and bolster youth to become change agents through funding for youth-led and youth-owned programs in communities where participants live to be held after their completion of the training camp.  These small grant programs will further impact 150 rural youth.

● Connect participants with international change agents through international speakers and individual connections to the GOALS network.

Cross-Cultural events: $1,500 (for two events)
● Create opportunity for girls to travel to Yerevan to partake in cross-cultural, competitive matches events, introducing local youth to diaspora Armenians and exposing participants to different perspectives and ideas, broadening their horizons.

Leadership Summer Camps: $6,000 (Each camp $2,000)
● Create three, 3-day summer camps, bringing together 145 youth from 18 different communities.
● Create a network of strong girls in the region, while allowing them to build new friendships, teamwork, and skills to compete.
● Dedicate one of the summer camps to the Women’s World Cup, raising awareness about inspiring women soccer players and World Cup countries.

● Hold public events with the Embassy of France in Armenia raising awareness about Women’s World Cup and drawing support for women’s soccer.

National Tournament: $4,000
● Bring all first-place teams from each of GOALS 8 leagues, from 8 regions of Armenia, to participate in GOALS National Tournament and identify the GOALS champion of the year!
● Create networking event for possible recruitment of GOALS players and chance to meet international and national activists.

The Need

Throughout Armenia, there are limited opportunities for girls to play soccer. Despite having a strong desire to do so, girls cannot find the resources necessary or sporting groups that make experiencing the game a possibility. In addition, organized sport participation has several benefits to youth development such as leadership skills, teamwork skills, confidence building and improved overall physical health. The GOALS organization helps give young women the chance to play soccer through their GOALS Leagues, Media, Coach and Referee trainings, Camps and After-school Clubs while helping Armenian communities change the broader mindset limiting girls and women in many aspects of their lives and see that girls can and should be future leaders of their country!

Short Term Impact

By the end of summer 2019, we will hold three three-day “Soccer Leadership Summer Camps” in three regions of the country. In each camp, 40 girls aged 14-16 from different villages in four communities are recruited and brought to the camp venue, impacting a total of 120 participants from 12 communities. Additionally, GOALS will organize two cross-cultural events, with the potential high-schoolers of AGBU school visiting Armenia, impacting over 60 participants. In June 2019, GOALS will hold a national tournament in cooperation with the Football Federation of Armenia and US Embassy in Armenia. The winners of each GOALS league, eight teams, 96 players (each team: 12 girls 12-17 years old) from 8 regions of Armenia, will participate in the final tournament. This will encourage players to recognize their skill level in comparison with the teams from other communities, make new friends, and also be seen by the audience and international guests. Through Youth Training Camp, five female soccer players from across Armenia total of 15 participants will become change agents in their community through participation in a sport leadership elite training camp in Hanqavan, Armenia.

Long Term Impact

In the long-term, public opinion regarding girls’ participation in soccer is changing, paving for the way for greater sports and leadership opportunities. We see a movement toward more inclusive soccer leagues that start at a young age and continue, also contributing to a competitive National Team for Armenia.

Kanakeravan Art School Classroom Renovation

Description

The Kanakeravan Fine Arts School is located in the village of Kanakeravan about 30 minutes outside of Yerevan and serves both this village and a neighboring village. The School provides afterschool program in several of the fine arts including music, dance, pottery, painting and needle work to more than 125 children annually. The School has a committed staff and principal that ensure that their personal passion for the arts is upheld and taught to these children.

The Paros Foundation has provided the school in past years with two new pianos and renovated the schools restroom and multipurpose room. The school is still in need of renovations to several of the classrooms and hallways including new flooring, doors, windows, paint and lighting. The local government provides the Art School support for their administrative expenses, while the students pay a modest monthly fee. Unfortunately, the support and fees are not enough to allow the school to complete the renovations on their own. Sponsorship of this project will help renovate a total of nine classroom/practice rooms and two administrative office.

Armenia’s villages and its children suffer from lack of facilities for children. The promotion of a child’s education and preservation of our rich culture depend on quality educational institutions. The Kanakeravan Fine Arts School can meet these needs with a modest amount of support.

Short Term Impact

125 children will have a newly renovated classrooms and practice rooms to attend. The renovation will employ a contractor and support the local economy through the purchase of necessary building materials.

Long Term Impact

Armenia’s rich heritage and culture will continue to be promoted through the support of this art school. In addition, life in the village of Kanakeravan will be more interesting and fulfilling by having a quality art school for children to study at and as a place for villagers to work.

Worn out and torn mats at the Baghanis School make it difficult and unsafe for the children during gym.



All old, unsafe and unusable sporting goods will be replaced with newer and safer equipment for students to use.

The Need

Children living in Armenia’s poverty stricken villages cannot afford basic toys and sporting goods that can provide them with hours of entertainment and good physical exercise. This effort would help meet this need.

Short Term Impact

Students at village schools will immediately benefit from use of the new equipment as part of the education and overall fitness.

Long Term Impact

In the long term the lives of several thousand children throughout the villages of Armenia will be positively affected. This project will not only promote good health through providing them with a chance to exercise, but will also help to increase good team work skills through team sports, and give them an opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities.

Samuel Khatchadourian has decided to spearhead an effort to raise funds in support of this project in lieu of presents for his Birthday with the help of his family & friends.

Today the shipment of new sporting goods arrived at the school in Baghanis. Excited students and staff helped unload the new balls, mats and other items.
