Nor Geghi is a village in the Kotayk Province of Armenia, located around 22 km north of the capital Yerevan, near the town of Nor Hachen. The village has a population of about 5,000 residents.

In 2015, The Paros Foundation completed renovations to the restrooms of the village kindergarten. 75 children & the staff now have brand new restrooms available to them. In the recent year, a new & very pro-active principal has taken over and has successfully obtained funding from different outlets in order to renovate the kitchen, and the upstairs classrooms. The kindergarten also houses a large auditorium, which is in need of a complete renovation. The principal hopes to be able to host not only kindergarten concerts and functions in the space as well as make it accessible to the entire village as a community center. The auditorium would be open to the village school to hold their functions as well as residents, the municipality and village guests. Sponsorship of this project will help complete renovations to the auditorium including new flooring, electrical fixtures, paint, new windows, a new door, a new stage, audio/visual technology and new auditorium chairs.

The Need

Nor Geghi is one of the larger populated villages in the area. In past years, village schools and residents have not had a proper center in which to showcase their students’ hard work and accomplishments. The auditorium housed in the kindergarten would provide them the perfect space in which to hold graduation ceremonies, musical recitals, concerts, seminars and other functions for the entire village.

Short Term Impact

In the short term the kindergarten auditorium will be renovated including new flooring, electrical fixtures, paint, new windows, a new door, a new stage, audio/visual technology and new auditorium chairs. Supplies will be purchased locally and locally labor will be used whenever possible, thus providing them with temporary jobs.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, the completion of this project will provide a proper facility for current and future kindergartners, students, and village residents to hold graduation ceremonies, musical recitals, concerts, seminars and other functions for the entire village.

The School provides afterschool program in several of the fine arts including music, dance, pottery, painting and needle work to more than 125 children annually. Talin Music School Piano

Description

The Talin School is located in the Aragatsotn Region and provides music classes to more than 110 children annually. The School employs 15 teachers and provides classes in piano, duduk, kanon, violin, vocal and music theory. The School receives support from the local government for administrative expenses and the students pay a modest monthly fee to attend classes. This support and fees are not enough, however, to enable the school to replace one of its baby grand pianos.

Azerbaijan has once again targeted the civilian population in villages along the Armenian border. Many homes in Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur, Aygepar and Chinari received varying degrees of damage. Our goal is to quickly deploy our work crews in the area to not only repair the damage but make improvements to these families’ homes.

On July 12, during the midst of the global pandemic surrounding Covid-19, Azerbaijan renewed its attack on Armenia in violation of the ceasefire agreement. Over the next two days, Azerbaijan launched artillery of various calibers at the Armenian civilian populations of several communities within Berd Consolidated Communities of Armenia’s Tavush Region. Families in these villages have experienced material losses on their homes and property. Thankfully, villagers remain safe and there has been no civilian loss of life during this period. While the Armenian government has already visited many to assist, The Paros Foundation’s Emergency Reconstruction Fund will work to not only make repairs to these damaged homes but, will make substantial improvements for them.

The best way for our compatriots to know the diaspora stands with them during this tense time is for us to not slow our work in this area, but to accelerate it by supporting these improvements within their communities.

As of July 15, 2020, four Armenian soldiers were killed during the fighting and several have been wounded including one in critical condition. The Armenian army has shot down 10 Azeri combat drones, including a Elbit Hermes 900 UAV with an estimated $30 million price tag. Moreover, two strategic Azeri military posts are now under Armenian control.

While the military losses on the Azeri side are reported to be substantial including the death of an Azeri general, Baku was the site of large protests by thousands of Azeris last night calling for war with Armenia.

Koghb Art School Ceramics Studio

Description

The Koghb Art School is located in the northeastern village of Koghb, Armenia and is home to approximately 6,000 residents. The village is situated about 3 kilometers from the Azeri and Armenian border. The Art School has been providing art education to the children of the Koghb region for more than 10 years. The school is open year round, seven days a week and holds many classes for the children of Koghb and its surrounding villages. Currently, there are about 50 school-aged students and 10 university-aged students attending classes and events. The joint effort put in by the staff, volunteers and pupils, provides comprehensive cultural education for all residents interested. The Art School provides many courses including drawing, painting, composition, and art history. Additionally, the school provides applied arts workshops in pottery, carpet-making, metal arts, and woodcarving. The Koghb Art School graduates keep a close bond to the school and continue to participate exhibitions, keep in touch with teachers and help current pupils whenever possible. Events and classes at the school are an important chance to nurture talented young artists living in this border region and ensure that they have a place to practice safely and comfortably. Through support from the local government, the school operates and holds classes in a comfortable, modern building.

The Koghb Art School would like to continue its wonderful work and extend their program to try to combat the village’s unemployment problem. Individuals in Koghb and the surrounding border villages have been leaving their homes in search of employment opportunities. The Koghb Art School seeks to provide not only education, but also training in traditional Armenian crafts, a skill that can be used to create employment and business opportunities for the entire village. The school already has a small business, Yereqnuk Handicrafts, which employs many local women and helps them earn a small income. The Art School’s idea is to help increase training and employment opportunities is by creating a permanent ceramics studio, with all the necessary conditions for training both children and professionals. As of now, children who take pottery workshops at the school are not able learn correct methods of pottery. They create small projects from clay, but because the school doesn’t have a kiln, projects break quickly and cannot be painted or glazed. If the children and visiting students could make a more professional pottery product, both interest in and attendance to the pottery workshops would increase significantly. Also, with the addition of a ceramics studio, the opportunities for employment in the community will increase.

The studio will be created in our existing applied arts studio. The school will provide the teacher’s salary and tables and chairs for the studio. Sponsorship of this project will help raise funds to purchase and install a kiln and pottery to complete the ceramics department. After equipment is installed and the studio is finished, themed workshops will be provided for children and students free of charge. The pottery studio will provide a new outlet for creativity, imagination, decorative qualities, and understanding of 3-D objects for its students. Furthermore, community training courses will also be offered.

The Need

A current issue in Koghb and the surrounding border villages is the lack of employment opportunities. Often times when individuals cannot find employment opportunities within their community or the surrounding areas, they relocate to Yerevan or Russia. The main objective is to find a profession that can be performed in this region, and will help keep and bring individuals back home.

Short Term Impact

The Koghb Art School Ceramics Studio will be established with a new kiln and pottery wheel to be used by all students and recent graduates (approximately 60 people). Students will have the opportunity to learn the art of pottery. Pottery workshops will be a permanent class for future students (grades 5-12) to choose from. Students, staff and interested community individuals can choose to be trained in a specific profession that they can use to support themselves over the first 2-3 years (15-20 people). Both the kiln and the pottery wheel will be made locally, thus providing local employment.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, the studio will be a place to develop skills for youth and talented individuals for the community and will also produce professional-grade products. Students can use skills learned here to apply to a higher-education institute and young adults can design and sell products made in the studio. Products can be sold under the existing brand, Yereqnuk Handicrafts, or under an individuals’ name. Creating this employment opportunity also has the potential to help keep and bring back individuals.

Talin Music School Project

Description

The town of Talin, with a population of about 5,400 people, is located in the Aragatsotn Region of Armenia and is considered one of the oldest residential areas of the region. Currently, Talin houses a music school in a building in poor condition without any proper practice or performance spaces for its 120 students and 15 teachers. The building lacks access to proper health and safety standards, and severely limits the school’s dedicated staff from doing their jobs. These horrible conditions also prevent the students’ ability to learn. The town of Talin is in need of a modernized school, offering a safe, comfortable and appropriate environment to study and teach classical and folk instruments and music.

The reconstruction will be a complete remodel of the existing building consisting of new individual practice and classrooms for students, western toilets and construction of a concert hall with ample seating. With these renovations the Talin Music School can properly assume its leadership capacity in the community. Furthermore, the professional environment of a newly renovated facility will encourage students to reach higher standards of excellence in their musical ambitions including: education, performance, and creative service. A positive and more creatively stimulating environment will also help instill confidence in performers, teachers, and the Talin community. Furthermore, the town of Talin has committed to support this project to the extent that they are able.

The school will be completed in three phases: The construction of the new concert hall, the renovation of the third floor and finally, the renovation of the second floor.

The local economy will benefit from construction jobs that will become available throughout the reconstruction process.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, a proper facility will have the potential to attract more students in order to give them the same opportunity as current students to renew their connections to Armenia’s rich musical culture. The newly renovated school will also be able to support a more diverse faculty and instrument offerings. Having modern facilities can have the potential to attract other talent and touring Armenia. Additionally, the reconstruction of the Talin Music School can have the potential to attract master instructors to teach master classes.

Thanks to the generous support of Vasken Ekmekjian and his family, funding is now available to begin the construction of the concert hall at the Talin Music School. After interviewing several contractors in Armenia, we chose our firm, and today they broke ground!

October 3, 2016

Exterior work on the concert hall is complete. The job comprised of raising the entire roof and ceiling for acoustics, combining several small rooms to create a larger concert hall, installing new windows, doors and a new fire escape.

November 15, 2016

Work on the interior of the concert hall has begun. A stage will be constructed along with beautiful tiled flooring, appropriate lighting, paint and new chairs will complete the hall.

January 17, 2017

A foggy and snowy visit to the Talin Music School today showed what terrific progress the crew is making on the interior. The walls are being completed now and the painting work will begin soon.

August 15, 2017

Vasken Ekmekjian and his family visited the Talin Music School to see the newly constructed concert hall in honor of his parents.

June 29, 2019

With funding secured to complete the renovation of several classrooms and one set of bathrooms, SERVICE Armenia spent several days at the Talin Music School working along side the Paros crew to renovate the second story of the school.

September 3, 2019

Students began this school year with an entirely renovated second floor. In 2020, the hope is to have enough funding to complete the entire first floor of the school.

Work at the Talin School has been continuing for that past three years with the help of SERVICE Armenia 2021, 2022 & 2023 and SERVICE Armenia Young Professionals 2022. More classrooms and offices have been updates through these efforts.

Nor Hachen Museum Project

Description

The town of Nor Hachen is located in the Kotayk region of Armenia and has a population of about 10,000 people. The town was named Nor Hachen in memory of the historic Armenian town of Hachen in Cilicia.

In 1973, a memorial to the Hachen resistance was erected in the town. The memorial is home to the museum of “History of the Armenians of Cilicia.” Every year, on the 2nd Sunday of October, Armenians from all over the world, mainly descendants of the historical town of Hachen, gather to commemorate the 1920 Hachen Resistance. The museum houses many important historical artifacts, including relics from the Armenian Genocide.

The museum, established in the 1970’s, would greatly benefit from additional funds for basic upkeep, preservation of artifacts, renovations to the physical space and operational costs. Sponsorship of this project will help care for these needs and improve the museums condition bringing more and more visitors to Nor Hachen to learn about the rich history of the Armenian people.

One such example if the story go Aguile Tatoulian. During the Armenian Genocide, she shaved off her hair and dressed herself up in men’s fatigues in order to protect herself and defend her city of 35,000, which was being raped and pillaged by the Turks. She was shot in her left rib and lived with that bullet for 67 years. She was 1 of 9 women who survived the massacres of Hachen in 1918. A couple of months after she survived, she wrote and staged a play to raise relief funds for survivors. Before she died in 1985, she requested she not be buried with a Turkish bullet -it sits in the Nor Hachen museum.

SERVICE Armenia 2019 worked at the Nor Hachen Museum, as one of their work sites for their service work. They spent several days, clearing out the backyard space, pruning trees, removing rocks and debris and spreading top spoil along with the Nor Hachen residents in order to prepare the area for the future park and leisure area.

Description

Vanadzor is the third largest city in Armenia and was almost completely destroyed by the 1988 Spitak Earthquake. The Vanadzor Art School (a.k.a. Vanadzor Music School #3) was completely rebuilt with the support of the All Armenia Fund and the Arshak II Opera Committee in 2003. The School currently provides music instruction to more than 250 students on both classical as well as folk instruments and dance classes. This school is the best in the region and feeds many students to the Music College and ultimately to the Yerevan Conservatory. Many students from the Vanadzor Art School have competed in national contests and have placed well. Some of these students have gone on to compete abroad representing Armenia. Current and potential students who could excel in this field cannot afford to pay the monthly tuition. Scholarships are needed for these children.

The Need

Prior to the devastating 1988 Spitak Earthquake, Vanadzor had several large factories employing its local population. Most of these factories are now closed or only partially working. The resulting high level of unemployment or underemployment makes it difficult for most in this city to provide the extra funds needed for music education for their children.

The long-term impact of this project on Armenia’s culture is not known as the potential of these future students’ impact will not be felt immediately. However, the potential is great both for Armenia’s culture and for potential employment opportunities for students that excel in music.

The Paros Choir will host four concerts including three performances in the Earthquake affected towns (Spitak, Vanadzor and Gyumri) and a final concert in Yerevan. The audiences will include persons with disabilities, representatives of local authorities, businesses, and other decision makers. The local media will cover the events. A brief oral presentation of the project goals as well as a 3-minute video demonstrating the success of The Paros Choir (joint performance with the world-renowned tenor Placido Domingo, successful participation in international contests, etc.) will precede each of the concerts. The final concert in Yerevan will be preceded by a press conference aimed at securing a wider coverage of the project.

In compliance with its mission, the Paros Chamber Choir will be promoting active way of life and cultural inclusion for PWD by its concerts in the Earthquake affected zones and in the capital city of Armenia.

Duration: 6 months. Month 1: preparation phase. Months 2-5: concerts in the regions. Month 6 – press conference and final concert in Yerevan.

The Need

Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in Armenia are mostly excluded from cultural activities. Due to the difficulties accessing cultural centers, concert halls, museums, etc., people with limited mobility, especially wheelchair users rarely have an opportunity to attend a concert or cultural event. In addition, public perceptions of PWD prevent their inclusion in cultural activities.

Short Term Impact

The audiences of the four concerts will be no less than 500 persons. The press conference will secure a wide coverage of the project outcomes, and the media reports will increase the number of people learning about the Choir and its activities to at least 15,000.

Long Term Impact

The success story of the Choir and its performances will encourage PWD to live a full life and will push decision makers to make the cultural facilities accessible. In a longer perspective, the rights of thousands of Armenians with disabilities will be promoted.

The names of the donors/supporters will be published on paros.am, unison.am, disability.am websites, in addition to The Paros Foundation website and in any appropriate press materials. Their names will also be listed in the concert programs published within the framework of the project. In addition, the organizers will thank the donors during each of the concerts. The organizers may also consider placing the donors’ banners on the stages of the concerts. The press release for the concluding press conference will include the names of all of the donors.
